The Flexible Electronics Laboratory at the University of Sussex is
looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr Niko
Münzenrieder on the research-intensive project "Shape sensing
textile for orthotics - <a moz-do-not-send="true"

This 3 year project aims to develop a textile sleeve with
an integrated array of stretchable sensors. The goal is to
quantify the shape and the pressure applied to body parts covered
with the textile sleeve, and hence to offer a digital alternative
to traditional plater cast moulds. The developed textile will be
used by our industrial and healthcare partners to improve the
process of manufacturing orthotics in the UK and low income
countries. This project is in collaboration with a orthotics
company based in the south of UK, a healthcare institution form
Kenya, and a major European research institute.

Your role will be to develop and fabricated novel highly
stretchable strain and pressure sensors on polymer substrates, and
to use flexible thin-film transistors to create a sensor matrix
inside a commercial textile fabric. This will be done inside our
recently refurbished class 100 cleanroom and in collaboration with
international partners. Data collection and processing will be
done in collaboration with a second full time postdoctoral
researcher.
Additionally, you will support the proof of concept and
evaluation of the system with our local partner in Kenya, to
optimize the textile for its application in a low income country.
Electronics Group within the Sensor Technology Research
Centre at the University of Sussex. This project gives the
opportunity to collaborate with multiple international partners
from industry and research which offers the possibility to gather
industrial experience as part of the project and regular meetings.
It also gives possibility to patent and commercialize some of the
research outcomes. Finally, project meetings, field trips to
Africa, and presentations at scientific conferences will involve
numerous international travels.
