Dear Abhishek Tripathi,

Please find enclosed the reviews for your submission for the Ubicomp/ISWC 2016 Doctoral School.

123: "An Energy Efficient NextGen Surveillance System using Wireless Sensor Networks"

Despite not being able to accept your submission at this year's Ubicomp/ISWC Doctoral School, committee members provided guidance and feedback on your submitted paper. We highly encourage you to follow the valuable advices that the committee member entered in their reviews towards improving on your doctoral work.

Thank you for submitting to the UbiComp 2014 Doctoral School.

------------------------ Submission 123, Review 1 ------------------------

Title: An Energy Efficient NextGen Surveillance System using Wireless Sensor Networks

Confidence

2 (Somewhat confident - I have passing knowledge)

Contribution to UbiComp

This work suggests combining movement sensors with cameras to increase
energy efficiency in video networks. It is relevant to Ubicomp, but the
novel aspects are not yet clear.

Overall Rating

2 (Probably reject: I would argue for rejecting this paper.)

The Review

   - The draft does not conform to the style guidelines and looks like a
resubmit from another conference without changes.
   - There is no clear idea of the specific research questions yet.
Duty-cycling sensors to save power is not a new idea, and its application
to wireless sensor networks is obvious and has been done before. It seems
clear that a specific application to video networks might create
interesting research questions, but the current draft indicates that the
author is too early in their PhD process to benefit significantly from
   input by the DC panel.

Title: An Energy Efficient NextGen Surveillance System using Wireless Sensor Networks

Confidence

3 (Very confident - I am knowledgeable in the area)

Contribution to UbiComp

This proposed research aims at developing energy efficient wireless
sensor networks in the setting of surveillance application

Overall Rating

1 (Definite reject: I would argue strongly for rejecting this paper.)

The Review

This is a topic that is definitely in line with Ubicomp and the research
has some potential to actually improve the state of the art of WSN.

However, the description of the research is very broad, there os no real
plan, and the proposed activities are not clear. It seems that this
student is very early on, too early to benefit of the Ubicomp DC. The
format of the submission is also wrong, both in terms of the template
used, and the content covered, which makes it even more difficult to have
a better understanding of the specific research.

While it is definitely too early for a C, the suggestion for this student
is to try to focus more clearly on how to reach the overall goals that
he/she is setting up. To do that it would be advisable to have better
research questions and hypotheses and make a plan of the activities
needed to test these hypotheses and build the technology proposed here.
