Dear Nadir and Max,

I would agree with both: offering to cover transportation and/or
covering accommodation for students would work. It might bring even
more networking opportunities for the PhD students among each other
if we put them into the same hotel, making the DC even more
immersive. However, arranging hotels might also be more difficult to
organize (because of different travel dates/times, preferences for
rooms, etc.).

If you'd like to reach out to Shwetak, then please just do so and
feel free to decide between the two of you how a) the NSF money
could be used (what would work and what wouldn't) and b) what to do
specifically for his student.

best regards,
Rene

Max, Rene (removing Alex from cc here).
Alex is our only US participant and he is Shwetak's student.
What should we offer to him as travel support? From Seattle to Frankfurt there is a very good 1-stop flight for $1,005 (see here http://goo.gl/flights/xM8b).
I am not sure about accommodation. I know that usually student share rooms, but he seems to be he only one requesting travel support.
One possibility would be to only cover transportation, rounding this to max $1,500, which should cover also taxis, trains, etc.
The additional possibility would be to book the rooms for the DC students all together (5x) and then get those reimbursed on my side from NSF... Not sure if it would fly though.
In that case, is there any particular accommodation (hotel) we can provide as part of the package?
I can reach out to Shwetak and make sure that I can get reimbursed on my side even if the students are not US...
What do you think?

Hi DC chairs,
I would really appreciate some financial support for travel if there is any available.
Thanks,
Alex
